Depression and Anxiety

Depression and anxiety are the most common reasons people seek psychotherapy.  Unrelenting sadness or worry or fear or even anger can drain all of the enjoyment from life and make it difficult to maintain relationships, to achieve goals, or to hold a job. Depression can feel like a heavy emptiness we carry around in us. It can feel like a hollowness that is actually weighing us down, so that sometimes even getting out of bed in the morning can seem like an impossible task.

Anxiety can make it very difficult to relax and feel at peace with ourselves and with others. Fears and worries, some which we can identify and some of which we can't, nag at us, stealing our sleep and troubling our thoughts. Often, anxiety brings the feeling that something has gone wrong, or soon will, even if we are not sure what that something is.

Depression and anxiety can ruin one's life, but it does not have to be that way.  We all have problems in our lives, but when we become overwhelmed with sadness or worry, it often means that there is another, unrecognized problem that lies at the root of our difficulties. Coming to an understanding of what lies beneath our feelings is part of the process of healing.
